Early Life and Military ServiceDon Carlos Buell, born in Marietta, Ohio, on March 23, 1818, embarked on a military career at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1841 as a second lieutenant of the Third Infantry Regiment.
Indian Wars and the Mexican-American War
Buell participated in the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), fighting against Native American tribes. He also served in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), notably at the Battle of Buena Vista.
Civil War Service
Organizer and Division CommanderAt the outbreak of the Civil War, Buell was one of the organizers of the Army of the Potomac. He commanded the Department of the Ohio and led a division in the Army of the Cumberland.
Controversy and Dismissal
Buell's military career was marred by accusations of ignoring orders from superiors. His perceived sympathy for the South, due to his slave ownership and sympathetic remarks, further damaged his reputation. A conflict with Colonel John Turchin led to Buell's dismissal from command on October 24, 1862.
