Early Life and EducationAntonio Ive was born on August 13, 1851, in Rovinj, which was then part of the Austrian Empire. He completed his studies in Italian and classical philology at the University of Vienna in 1875.
Teaching Career
Following his graduation, Ive taught at various гимназии (secondary schools) in Capodistria, Trento, and Innsbruck. In 1893, he was appointed to the chair of Italian language and literature at the University of Graz, where he remained until his retirement.
Scholarly Contributions
Ive's most significant scholarly contributions lie in his study of the history and contemporary state of North Italian dialects, particularly those spoken in his native region of Istria. He published extensively on these dialects, including their phonology, morphology, and syntax.
Ive also made valuable contributions to the field of folklore. He discovered and published manuscripts of traditional songs and stories from various North Italian dialects. In 1879, he discovered a 14th-century manuscript of the Neapolitan version of the chivalric romance "Fioravante" in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Later Years and Legacy
Antonio Ive died on January 9, 1937, in Graz, Austria. His work on North Italian dialects and folklore remains highly influential in the field of linguistics and literary history.
