Early Life and Education

Cardinal Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga was born in Quito, Ecuador. He pursued his studies at the Seminary of Quito and the Pontifical Seminary of Salamanca in Spain.

Priestly Ministry

On June 29, 1951, Vela Chiriboga was ordained as a priest. He served as Titular Bishop of Tagara and Auxiliary Bishop of Quito from 1969 to 1978.

Episcopal and Cardinalate Career

In 1978, Vela Chiriboga became Bishop of Machala. In 1980, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Quito with the right of succession. He served as Archbishop of Quito from 1985 to 2003.

During his tenure as Archbishop, Vela Chiriboga was named Primate of Ecuador from 1995 to 2005. In 2001, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the College of Cardinals with the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria in Via.
