Ants Antson, a gifted Estonian speed skater, achieved remarkable success in his career.
Early Training
Antson's early athletic talents were recognized by his first coach, Olaf Olman. Olman admired the effortless glide of Boris Shilkov, an Olympic and world champion, and decided to send Antson to Shilkov's tutelage.
Joining the National Team
Upon joining the national team, Antson expressed his gratitude for being under Shilkov's guidance. Initially, his reserved nature and skeptical demeanor posed challenges for the experienced coach. However, Shilkov's patience and unwavering belief in his methods gradually convinced Antson.
Breakthrough
Antson experienced a pivotal moment during training when he seemed to grasp the essence of the perfect push-off. This realization fueled his determination and paved the way for his subsequent triumphs.
European Championship Victory
In 1964, Antson faced formidable competition in the European Championships. Despite trailing behind Yuri Yumushev, he displayed unmatched determination and technical prowess, ultimately emerging victorious. His victory was particularly significant as he broke several personal records, including a remarkable 2.09.8 in the 1500-meter race.
Olympic Glory
Antson achieved the pinnacle of his career at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. Despite challenging conditions, he showcased his exceptional ability, setting a new Olympic record in the 1500-meter event and claiming the gold medal. The euphoria of his victory was short-lived as he collapsed upon crossing the finish line due to utter exhaustion.
Post-Retirement
After retiring from competitive skating, Ants Antson assumed the role of Head of Sports in the Central Tallinn Administration. His legacy as a skilled athlete and a dedicated coach continues to inspire future generations of skaters.
