Father Matija Petar Katančić
Matija Petar Katančić (1750-1825) was a prominent Jesuit, Croatian poet, and historian.
Education and Early Career
Born in Croatia, Katančić pursued his studies in philosophy and theology at the universities of Vienna and Graz.
Literary Contributions
"Saint Rosalia, the Virgin of Palermo"Katančić's masterpiece, the poem "Saint Rosalia, the Virgin of Palermo," is widely regarded as a pinnacle of 18th-century Croatian literature. Matko Peič, a renowned Croatian literary critic, described it as "one of the greatest achievements of Rococo writing." Despite its completion in 1759, it was only published posthumously in 1780.
"The True Ground of Great Schism"
In addition to his poetic works, Katančić also authored "The True Ground of Great Schism," a historical treatise published in 1780. This work delved into the Great Schism and argued that the Greeks bore the sole responsibility for the division, absolving the Slavs of any blame.
