Anush-Tegin: The Founder of the Khwarazmshahs
Early Life and CareerAnush-Tegin ruled Khwarazm from 1077 to 1097 and was the founder of the Khwarazmshahs of the Anushteginid dynasty. According to Rashid al-Din and Hafiz-i Abru, he was of Turkic origin and belonged to the Oghuz tribe of Bekdili. In his youth, he was a slave in Garchistan and was later purchased by the Seljuk emir, Izaddin Oner Bilge-Tegin, who appointed him as his treasurer.
Royal Service and Appointment as Governor
Anush-Tegin rose through the ranks of the Seljuk government, eventually becoming a trusted retainer of Sultan Malik-shah. As his position as treasurer required funding from the tax revenues of Khwarazm, he was appointed as the governor (mutasarif) of the region in 1077. However, his authority was limited by the presence of the viceroy (wali) of Khwarazm, Ekinchi ibn Kochkar, who was a mameluke of Malik-shah's son, Ahmad Sanjar.
Legacy and Successors
Anush-Tegin died in 1097, and the governorship of Khwarazm passed to Ekinchi ibn Kochkar before ultimately being inherited by Anush-Tegin's son, Qutb al-Din Muhammad. As the founder of the Khwarazmshahs, Anush-Tegin's legacy lay in establishing a dynasty that would eventually rule over an empire stretching from Central Asia to Persia.
