Saint Anisia: A Martyr's Journey

Early Life and Conversion

Anisia, a Christian saint revered as a martyr, lived in the Greek city of Thessalonica during the reign of Emperor Maximian. Born into a Christian family, she devoted herself to prayer and fasting after inheriting her parents' estate, which she distributed to the poor.

Martyrdom

As Anisia made her way to church, she encountered a Roman soldier who attempted to redirect her to a pagan festival. Refusing his advances, she repelled him and spat in his face, invoking the power of Jesus Christ. Enraged, the soldier drew his sword and fatally stabbed her.

Legacy and Veneration

The Thessalonians buried Anisia's body outside the city walls, and a chapel was later erected over her tomb. Today, her relics rest in a silver reliquary in the Basilica of Saint Demetrius in Thessaloniki. Anisia's memory has been commemorated since the 10th century, and her feast day is celebrated on December 30th in the Orthodox Church and January 12th in the Catholic Church.

Popular Traditions

In Russian tradition, Anisia's feast day, known as "Anisya-Zheludochnitsa," is associated with divination. People slaughter pigs and geese and examine their internal organs to predict the severity of the impending winter.
