Early Life and Family

Peter Nolasco (Pedro Nolasco), a prominent Catholic saint and founder of the Mercedarian Order, was born into a wealthy merchant family in either Mas-Saintes-Puelles or Barcelona, Spain, in 1189. Upon his father's death when he was around 15 years old, Peter inherited a substantial fortune.

Captivity of Christians and Peter's Redemption Mission

During Peter's youth, a significant portion of the Iberian Peninsula was under Moorish rule. Enslavement of Christian captives was rampant, and Peter was deeply moved by their plight. With his inherited wealth, he initiated a private mission to ransom Christian prisoners, devoting himself to liberating thousands of individuals from slavery.

Founding the Mercedarian Order

Around the early 1220s, Peter experienced a vision that inspired him to establish a monastic order dedicated to the redemption of captives. King James I, Saint Raymond of Peñafort (the royal confessor), and Berenguer, the Bishop of Barcelona, endorsed his idea. In the Barcelona Cathedral, Peter and two companions solemnly took monastic vows before the Bishop.

Personal Sacrifice and Legacy

In 1226, Peter Nolasco demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his cause by willingly becoming a prisoner in Africa. Several months later, he was ransomed by his fellow brothers. From the order's founding until Peter's death in 1256, the Mercedarians secured the release of approximately 4,300 captives. Peter served as the order's first master, and Saint Raymond Nonnat later succeeded him.

Royal Support and Sainthood

King James I was an ardent supporter of the Mercedarian Order. Peter Nolasco passed away on January 25, 1256 (Christmas Day), leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering faith.
