Early Life and Education
Modest Andlauer was born into a devout Catholic family and received his early education at a minor seminary. On October 8, 1872, he joined the Jesuit novitiate after successfully completing his seminary studies.
Jesuit Priest
On September 22, 1877, Andlauer was ordained a Catholic priest. In 1881, he was sent to China as a missionary, where he dedicated himself to spreading the faith after mastering the Chinese language.
Martyrdom during the Boxer Rebellion
During the Boxer Rebellion in China, Christians faced severe persecution. On June 19, 1900, Andlauer was killed by rebels for his unwavering faith alongside Father Remy Isoré.
Canonization and Veneration
Andlauer was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 17, 1955, and canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, along with 120 other Chinese martyrs. His feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on July 9.
