Arvella Simotas: A Trailblazing Greek American Politician and Advocate
Born in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to Greek immigrant parents, Arvella Simotas has made a significant mark on New York City politics.
Early Life and Career
At the age of six months, Simotas' family relocated to Astoria, Queens. She holds degrees from Fordham University (B.A.) and Fordham Law School (J.D.). Her passion for environmental law led her to work as an attorney at Bickel & Brewer and in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Public Service and Politics
Simotas' public service career began as a district representative for Peter Vallone Sr. and Jr. of the New York City Council. In 2011, she was elected to the New York State Assembly, becoming the first woman to represent the 36th district.
Women's Issues
As Chair of the Assembly Women's Task Force, Simotas has advocated tirelessly for policies benefiting women. Her legislation successfully redefined rape in New York State, recognizing the vulnerabilities faced by victims. She also co-hosts an annual event honoring women leaders in Queens.
Energy and Environment
Simotas champions environmental sustainability and green development in her district. She has spearheaded legislation protecting utility consumers and led initiatives to reduce waste and pollution.
Civil Rights

Simotas is married to John Katzanos and they have one daughter. They reside in Astoria, Queens. She is fluent in Greek and remains deeply connected to her Hellenic heritage.
