Biography of Archibald Clark Kerr

Archibald Clark Kerr, also known as Baron Inverchapel, was a Scottish diplomat and member of the British Secret Council. He began his diplomatic career in 1905 and served as a volunteer in the Scottish Guards during World War I from November 1916 until its end.

In the years 1935-1938, he was appointed as the British Ambassador to Iraq, and from 1938-1942, he served as the British Ambassador to China. In 1942, he was posted as the British Ambassador to the Soviet Union, where the British Embassy was temporarily located in Kuibyshev until it returned to Moscow in 1943.

Kerr was known for his socializing skills and was even known to have gotten highly intoxicated with A.Y. Vyshinsky and could not recall the movie he watched after their lunch together. He was also known to have enjoyed drinking with Lavrentiy Beria.

In early 1946, Kerr was appointed as a special British envoy to Indonesia to help resolve the conflict between the Netherlands and Indonesia. From 1946-1948, he served as the British Ambassador to the United States. In January 1946, he was elevated to the peerage and received the title of Baron Inverchapel in the Parliament.

Kerr was married to Maria Teresa since 1929. In recent decades, rumors about his personal life have circulated in the English-speaking media. He was knighted as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1942, having previously been a Knight Commander since 1935.
