A Life on the Pitch: Arend van der Vel
Born in Amsterdam on March 28, 1933, Arend van der Vel embarked on a successful football career that spanned several clubs and roles.
Humble Beginnings
Van der Vel's football journey began at the local club De Volewijckers. In 1947, he joined the youth team of AFC Ajax alongside his friends Theo de Groot and Wim van der Zeeuw. Five years later, at the age of 19, he made his debut for the first team.
Ajax Career
During his tenure at Ajax, which lasted until 1955, Van der Vel showcased his scoring prowess. He became the club's top scorer in the 1952/1953 season with 13 goals in 22 matches. However, playing time gradually declined, leading him to depart in search of greater opportunities.
Post-Ajax Years
Van der Vel moved to FC Twente in 1955, where he played for five seasons. He later became the head of the team in 1997 and transitioned to a scouting role in 1999. Additionally, he joined SC Enschede and Cambuur as a player during the latter stages of his playing career. Notably, he was among the first players on Cambuur's inaugural roster when the club was founded in 1964.
