Biography of Pietro Vierchowod

Pietro Vierchowod, a former Italian footballer and central defender, is also known for his career as a coach. He represented the Italian national team and participated in three World Cup tournaments (1982, 1986, 1990). He was a member of the 1982 World Cup winning team, and also achieved success in club competitions, winning the UEFA Champions League in 1995/96, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1989/90, and being a two-time champion of Italy and a three-time winner of the Italian Cup. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Early Life and Career

Pietro Vierchowod, of Ukrainian descent, was born in 1959. His father, Ivan Lukyanovich Vierchowod, was a Soviet prisoner of war during World War II, who settled in Italy after the war. Vierchowod began playing football at a young age and played for the amateur club "Romanese". In 1976, he made his debut for the professional club "Como", which was competing in Serie B of Italian football. In 1980, "Como" was promoted to Serie A. Vierchowod spent the next two seasons on loan at "Fiorentina", where they finished in second place, and "Roma", with whom he won the league title.

Success with Sampdoria

In 1983, Vierchowod was acquired by "Sampdoria" and remained a key player for the Genoa-based club for the next 12 seasons. With "Sampdoria", Vierchowod won his second Serie A championship, as well as four Italian Cups, one Super Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. In 1995, Vierchowod joined "Juventus" and immediately won the Super Cup (1-0 against "Parma"). At the end of the season, he also won the UEFA Champions League with the team, defeating "Ajax" in a penalty shootout. The following season, Vierchowod played for "Milan", but the season was highly unsuccessful for the club, finishing in 11th place. He then played for "Piacenza" for the next three seasons, helping the club avoid relegation from Serie A. Vierchowod retired as a player in 2000 at the age of 41 when "Piacenza" finished last and was relegated from the top division. At the time of his retirement, Vierchowod had played 563 matches in Serie A, placing him second on the all-time list, behind the famous goalkeeper Dino Zoff.

International Career

Vierchowod made his debut for the Italian national team on January 6, 1981, in a friendly match against the Netherlands. He became a regular starter for the national team from 1983 until 1993 when he decided to retire from international football. Although he was part of the Italian squad that won the 1982 World Cup, Vierchowod did not feature in any matches. He also represented the Olympic team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where they finished in fourth place.

Coaching Career

Vierchowod's coaching career did not have the same success as his playing career. He attempted to manage three Italian teams from lower divisions, but was dismissed before the end of each season.
