Ari Freyr Skúlason: A Journey through Icelandic Football

Ari Freyr Skúlason is an Icelandic professional footballer who currently plays as a defender for Belgian club Lokeren and as a midfielder for the Iceland national team.

Early Career in Iceland and the Netherlands

Skúlason's football career began at the youth academy of Valur in Iceland. At the age of 16, he made the move to the Netherlands, where he spent two seasons with Heerenveen.

Return to Iceland and Move to Sweden

In late 2005, Skúlason returned to Valur for half a season before signing with Swedish club Häcken. In 2008, after Häcken failed to gain promotion to the Swedish Allsvenskan, Skúlason joined top-flight club Sundsvall at the end of the year. He later became the club captain at the start of the 2012 season.

Transfer to Denmark and International Debut

On July 11, 2013, Skúlason signed a contract with Danish Superliga club Odense. An agreement between the clubs was announced on July 19th. He played his final match for Sundsvall on July 27th.

International Career

Skúlason has represented Iceland at various youth levels. He made his senior debut for the national team in 2009 in a match against Iran. Since then, he has become a regular mainstay in the Icelandic midfielder and has played a crucial role in their recent successes, including qualification for the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
