Early Life and Medical Career
Aribert Ferdinand Heim was born in Bad Radkersburg, Austria-Hungary, in 1914. His father was a police officer, and his mother was a homemaker. Heim studied medicine and practiced in Vienna until 1940, when he volunteered for the Waffen-SS.
"Doctor Death" at Mauthausen
During World War II, Heim earned the nickname "Doctor Death" for his actions at the Mauthausen concentration camp in present-day Austria. Serving there from October 1941 to February 1942, Heim was responsible for the torture and murder of hundreds of prisoners. He conducted "medical experiments" on Jewish inmates, including:
- Performing surgeries without anesthesia
- Injecting victims with gasoline, water, or poison- Recording precise observations of the rate of death
War Crime Trials and Disappearance
Captured by American forces in 1945, Heim was acquitted of war crimes in 1947. He resumed medical practice in West Germany until 1962, working in Mannheim and later as a gynecologist in the resort town of Baden-Baden.
When threatened with prosecution for war crimes, Heim disappeared from his villa in Germany. Only an empty house remained.
Suspected Hideouts and Death Claims
In 2008, the Simon Wiesenthal Center reported that Heim had sought refuge in Patagonia, Chile, based on evidence from two sources. One claim was supported by the presence of Heim's daughter in the region.
In 2009, German television station ZDF TV alleged that "Doctor Death" had died in Egypt from colon cancer in 1992 under the alias Tariq Farid Hussein. Documentary evidence and a death certificate were presented.
Heim's son Rudiger confirmed that Aribert Heim and Tariq Farid Hussein were the same person. However, the Simon Wiesenthal Center has remained skeptical until Heim's body is exhumed and DNA evidence is obtained.
