Armenian Soviet and Russian Actor and Director
Artavazd Stepanovich Burdzhalyan (1872-1937) was an Armenian Soviet and Russian actor and director, and an Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR (1934). He was the younger brother of Russian actor Georgy Burdzhalov (Burdzhalyan).
Early Career and the "Flying Mouse" Theatre
From 1896, Burdzhalyan was a member of the Society of Art and Literature (Moscow), founded by Stanislavski. He acted and directed at the "Flying Mouse" Theatre (1908) and the Korsh Theatre (1913-17) in Moscow.
Work in Armenia and Founding of the Opera and Ballet Theatre
Burdzhalyan played a pivotal role in Armenian theatre. From 1924 to 1927, he directed the 1st State Theatre in Yerevan, and from 1941 to 1943, he led the Mravyan Theatre in Leninakan. As one of the founders of the Alexander Spendiaryan Armenian Opera and Ballet Theatre in Yerevan, he served as its Chief Director from 1933 to 1938. Burdzhalyan was instrumental in introducing the principles of Stanislavski's system to Armenian theatre.
