Grigory Vasilyevich Dontsov
Early Life and CareerGrigory Vasilyevich Dontsov (1901-1978) was a Soviet writer and screenwriter, renowned as the father of popular detective novelist Darya Dontsova. Inspired by the Komsomol movement, he enlisted voluntarily in the Baltic Fleet in 1922. Later, in 1929, he joined the ranks of the OGPU (Unified State Political Administration).
Journalism and Literary Work
From 1932 onward, Dontsov worked as an editor for the newspaper "Rabochy Kray" (Workers' Territory). His literary career flourished in the 1960s, during which he served as a member of the editorial boards of renowned magazines such as "Krokodil" (Crocodile), "Moskva" (Moscow), and "Ogonek" (Little Fire). He also held the position of secretary for the Communist Party organization within the Writers' Union.
Controversial Role in the Siniavsky-Daniel Trial
Dontsov played an infamous role as a public prosecutor in the trial of writers Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel in 1966. His support for the prosecution drew significant controversy. Furthermore, the renowned children's author Kornei Chukovsky famously prohibited Dontsov from attending his funeral.
Tragic Demise
In a tragic turn of events, Dontsov's life came to an abrupt end after a botched surgery. According to his daughter Darya Dontsova, he checked himself into an emergency room with a gallstone attack. Despite the seemingly routine procedure of removing his gallbladder, the operation was mishandled. After enduring several days of agony, Dontsov succumbed to his injuries.
