Armand Fallières: The Gentleman President of France
Early Life and CareerArmand Fallières was born into a humble family in Nérac, France. His grandfather was a blacksmith, while his father was a surveyor and bailiff. Fallières entered the political arena in the 1870s, quickly rising through the ranks.
Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister
In 1883, Fallières briefly served as Prime Minister. For the next 16 years, he held various ministerial positions, gaining a reputation for his pragmatism and administrative skills.
President of the Senate
After Émile Loubet's election as President in 1899, Fallières became President of the Senate. He skillfully guided the upper chamber through turbulent times.
Presidency
In 1906, Fallières was elected the ninth President of France. He actively promoted the strengthening of the Entente Cordiale with Britain and Russia. However, he was a staunch opponent of war with Germany.
Visit from the Tsar
In 1909, President Fallières welcomed Russian Emperor Nicholas II to Cherbourg, symbolizing the close ties between France and Russia.
Legacy
Fallières retired from office in 1913 after serving his full seven-year term. He famously declared upon leaving the presidency, "I am making way for war," referring to the growing tensions with Germany. Indeed, World War I erupted just one year later.
Fallières was a vocal opponent of capital punishment and pardoned numerous death row inmates during his presidency. He is remembered as a moderate and consensus-building leader who guided France through a period of great political and social transformation.
