After graduation, Abagyan embarked on a successful career at NPO Energia, where he served as Deputy General Director from 1976 to 1984. In 1984, he became the General Director of VNIINPP (the Research Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Operation), a position he held until his passing in 2005.
Abagyan was also involved in other key roles in the nuclear industry, including as Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom and editor of the journal "Atomic Energy."
