Biography of Aron Baynes
Australian basketball player Aron Baynes has had a long journey to the NBA. Born in Gisborne, New Zealand, Baynes began his basketball career at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2005 before transferring to Washington State University in the United States. Despite his talent, Baynes was not selected in the NBA draft and had to pursue opportunities in Europe.
European Journey
After his unsuccessful attempt to join the NBA, Baynes found success playing for various European teams. He joined the Vilnius-based team 'Lietuvos Rytas' in Lithuania, where he honed his skills in the Lithuanian League and Euroleague. Baynes then played in Germany for 'EWE Baskets Oldenburg' before moving to the Greek League with 'Ikaros Kallitheas'. He briefly played for the Slovenian team 'Union Olimpija' before finally getting his chance in the NBA.
Arrival in the NBA
On January 23, 2013, Baynes signed a contract with the NBA team 'San Antonio Spurs'. In just his second game, he made an impact with 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 1 successful block, contributing to his team's victory over the 'Charlotte Bobcats'. Although Baynes was occasionally assigned to the D-League team 'Austin Toros', his time there was relatively short. He made his first start for the Spurs in a playoff game against the 'Los Angeles Lakers'.
International Career
Baynes also represented Australia in international competitions. He participated in the FIBA World Championship in Turkey in 2010 and was later included in the Australian Olympic team for the 2012 London Olympics. Despite limited playing time, Baynes performed well, averaging 12 minutes per game and finishing fifth on the team in scoring with an average of 7.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 65%.
