Early Life and High School Career
Michael Beasley was born in Frederick, Maryland, and attended Notre Dame Preparatory School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He played for the PG Jaguars youth basketball team alongside future NBA star Kevin Durant, winning multiple national championships. In his senior year of high school, Beasley was named the Most Valuable Player of the McDonald's All-American Game and was selected to the USA Today All-USA Second Team.
College Career
Beasley enrolled at Kansas State University in 2007 and quickly became a star player for the Wildcats. Led by head coach Frank Martin, the Wildcats made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years in 2008, reaching the second round. Beasley led the nation in rebounding (12.4 per game) and was third in scoring (26.2 per game). He earned numerous awards, including Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
NBA Draft and Early Career with the Miami Heat
After one season in college, Beasley declared for the NBA Draft. He was projected to be selected either first or second overall, after Memphis guard Derrick Rose. Beasley worked out for both the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat, who held the top two picks in the draft. On June 26, 2008, the Bulls selected Rose with the first pick, and the Heat drafted Beasley second overall.
Beasley struggled to find a consistent role in Miami during his rookie season. He appeared in 81 games, starting only 19, and averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Nonetheless, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Controversies and Trades
In July 2010, the Heat traded Beasley to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a second-round pick in the 2011 draft. The move allowed Miami to clear cap space to sign three top free agents: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
Prior to the 2008-09 season, Beasley was involved in a controversy along with two other NBA rookies, Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur. Police investigated their hotel room after a fire alarm, detecting a strong odor of marijuana. Although no physical evidence was found, the NBA suspended both players from training camp and fined them $20,000 each. Beasley was later fined an additional $50,000 for admitting that he had been in the room but left before the police arrived.
In August 2009, Beasley entered a drug rehabilitation facility in Houston to address depression. He returned to the Heat in late September, shortly before training camp.
Continued Struggles
On June 30, 2011, Beasley was arrested in a Minneapolis suburb for speeding and possession of marijuana. Police stopped his car, which was traveling at 84 miles per hour in a 65-mile-per-hour zone, and detected a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the vehicle yielded 16.2 grams of the drug. Beasley claimed that the package belonged to a friend whom he had dropped off earlier.
Beasley's NBA career has been marked by inconsistency and off-court issues. Despite his undeniable talent, he has struggled to maintain a high level of play and has been traded multiple times.
