Arslan Gebrailevich Kafoev: A Legendary Pilot
Early Life and EducationArslan Gebrailevich Kafoev was born on January 20, 1922, in the village of Urvan, Kabardino-Balkaria. In 1930, he began attending school, where he quickly demonstrated a strong interest in aviation. Despite his family's modest means, Arslan's older brother, Magomed, who had attended aviation school in Bataysk, provided financial assistance for Arslan to pursue his dream of flying.
In 1938, Arslan joined the Naltchik Aeroclub as an apprentice, and later became a cadet. He completed his studies at the prestigious Yeisk Military Naval Aviation School named after Stalin in 1941.
World War II
Upon graduation, Arslan was assigned to the 73rd Aviation Regiment of the Baltic Fleet, where he served as a dive bomber pilot. He distinguished himself in combat, destroying enemy vehicles and infrastructure.
In 1942, Arslan's younger brother, Vladimir, also joined the 73rd Regiment as a fighter pilot. The brothers often flew together in battle.
On March 8, 1944, tragedy struck when Vladimir was shot down over the Gulf of Finland. Vladimir had achieved remarkable success as a fighter pilot, having shot down two German planes. His death was a devastating loss for Arslan and the entire regiment.
Post-War Career
After the war, Arslan continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force. He retired in 1957 with the rank of Major.
He then pursued a career in academia. He earned a degree from the Kabardino-Balkarian Pedagogical Institute and later obtained a doctorate from Moscow State University. He taught political economy and conducted extensive research on the history of the North Caucasian peoples.
Legacy
Arslan Kafoev was a highly respected and influential figure in Kabardino-Balkaria. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the Red Banner (twice) and the Order of the Patriotic War.
In 2002, the Naltchik Aeroclub was renamed the Kafoev Brothers Aeroclub in recognition of their contributions to aviation.
Arslan Kafoev passed away in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and academic achievement. He remains an inspiration to young people in Kabardino-Balkaria and throughout Russia.
