Biography of Arseny Tarkovsky

Arseny Aleksandrovich Tarkovsky was a Russian poet and translator of Eastern languages. He was born in Yelizavetgrad into a family of revolutionaries, and his childhood and youth coincided with a difficult period in Russian history, which he experienced fully. In the 1920s, Tarkovsky lived in Moscow and began working at the newspaper "Gudok" in 1924, where he led the poetry department for two years. In 1925, he enrolled in the Higher State Literary Courses and graduated in 1929. He wrote poems and published them in a student collection in 1926. Starting from 1932, Tarkovsky actively engaged in translation work, paying special attention to classical poetry from the East. He translated poems from Turkmen, Armenian, Georgian, and Arabic languages. During the Great Patriotic War, he worked for the army newspaper "Boevaya Trevoza". Tarkovsky withheld his own poems from publication for a long time, and they only appeared in print when he was already 50 years old. Subsequently, his poems were published in various journals and almanacs over a period of twenty years, which culminated in six poetry collections: "Before the Snow" (1962), "Earthly to the Earth" (1966), "Herald" (1969), "Poems" (1974), "Winter Day" (1980), and "Selected Works" (1982). In 1983, "Poems from Different Years" were published, which brought together the best of his previously published works. Tarkovsky's last book was "From Youth to Old Age". Arseny Tarkovsky always kept his distance from the literary hustle and bustle and lived in Peredelkino for many years. He also wrote theoretical and critical articles and reviews. He passed away in Moscow.
