Early Life and Beginnings
Artem Manko, born into a Ukrainian family, developed an early passion for fencing, taking up the sport at the tender age of six. However, a tragic accident in 2013 forced him to reassess his life and athletic aspirations.
A Life-Changing Event
In November 2010, Manko suffered a severe fall from the fifth floor of a building. The injuries he sustained, including fractures to his hands and legs, resulted in his paralysis. Despite the immense challenges he faced, Manko's determination remained unwavering.
Adapting with Resilience
With unwavering spirit, Manko transitioned to wheelchair fencing in 2013. He continued to train relentlessly, adjusting to the demands of this new discipline with unwavering determination.
Meteoric Rise to Success
Manko's dedication soon bore fruit. In 2017, he claimed the bronze medal at the World Championships, followed by a similar feat at the 2018 European Championships. His triumphant streak continued, as he emerged victorious as the World Champion and won a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships.
Paralympic Debut and Silver Glory
Manko's hard work and perseverance culminated in his Paralympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games. He showcased his exceptional skills, securing a silver medal in the individual sabre event. Manko's triumph served as a testament to his indomitable spirit and the transformative power of sportsmanship.
Education and Beyond
In addition to his athletic achievements, Manko holds a degree in Information Technology from the Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University in Mykolaiv, Ukraine. His dedication extends beyond the fencing arena, as he actively inspires others with disabilities to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
