Aliza Scurrgs: From Queens to Olympic Glory

Early Life and Fencing Roots

Aliza Scurrgs, an American fencer extraordinaire, was born and raised in Queens, New York. Her journey into the world of fencing began at the tender age of six, inspired by her older brother joining a fencing club in Brooklyn. She honed her skills at the Packer Collegiate Institute, graduating in 2021.

College and Academic Pursuits

Scurrgs continued her fencing career while pursuing higher education at Harvard University, where she is a Philosophy major. She has also been open about her sexual orientation, currently being in a relationship with a fellow student.

Junior Success and International Recognition

Scurrgs's talent shone early on as she became a two-time Junior World Fencing Champion, claiming individual gold medals in 2019 and 2022. Her international success continued with an individual gold medal at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Championships in Durham, North Carolina.

Olympic Qualification and Paris 2024

In June 2024, Scurrgs earned a bronze medal at the Pan American Fencing Championships in Lima. This paved the way for her to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris, where she made history by securing a bronze medal in the individual foil competition on March 17th, 2024.

Olympic Silver and Legacy

Despite a spirited performance in the final, Scurrgs fell short of gold, finishing with a silver medal against her American teammate, Lee Kiefer. Nonetheless, her Olympic medal marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first African American woman to medal in individual fencing for the United States.

Beyond the Piste

Scurrgs is not only an accomplished athlete but also a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion. She works closely with the Peter Westbrook Foundation, providing fencing instruction to children and youth from underrepresented communities. Her journey is not only about athletic achievements but also about empowering others through the transformative power of sport.
