Biography of Arthur Grigoryan
Arthur Grigoryan, an Uzbekistani boxer of Armenian descent, was born in 1967 in Tashkent to a family from Nagorno-Karabakh. He began boxing under the guidance of Lev Akhmedzhanov in 1978.
Amateur Career
In 1990, Grigoryan became the winner of the Goodwill Games in Seattle, and in 1991, he reached the final and won the silver medal at the World Championships in Sydney. He also participated in the Olympic Games in Barcelona as a member of the Unified Team.
At the 1991 World Championships, Grigoryan had five fights:
- Round of 16: Victory over Spanish boxer Juan Carlos Sais by points (26:18)
- Quarterfinals: Victory over Korean boxer Sun Sik Hong by points (19:7)
- Semifinals: Victory over Australian boxer Justin Russell by points (21:15)
- Final: Defeat to German boxer Marco Rudolph by points (14:19)
Professional Career
Grigoryan made his professional debut on April 10, 1994. Two years later, he earned the right to challenge for the vacant WBO World Lightweight title. In the title fight, he knocked out renowned Puerto Rican boxer Antonio Rivera in the 12th round, becoming the champion. He successfully defended his title 17 times, defeating strong contenders such as future and former WBA World Champions Raul Balbi and Stefano Zoff, as well as his amateur championship final opponent, Marco Rudolph. Grigoryan considers his best fight to be a technical decision victory over Giorgio Campanella in the 10th round.
In January 2004, Grigoryan lost a points decision to Brazilian boxer Acelino Freitas, resulting in the loss of his championship title. In September of that same year, he had one more fight before deciding to retire. Following his retirement, Grigoryan transitioned into coaching at the Universum Box Promotion club, where he trains a group of young boxers and helps prepare the club's strongest representatives, including heavyweight world champion Ruslan Chagaev. In February 2009, Grigoryan participated in a show dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Universum promotional company.
