Biography of Artur Yusupov

Artur Yusupov is a German-born, former Soviet chess player. He is a grandmaster and was awarded the title in 1980. Yusupov also holds the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, which he received in 1987. He had an Elo rating of 2587 in July 2008, with his highest rating being 2680 in July 1995. He achieved his highest ranking in the rating list at 3rd place in July 1987.

Early Life and Career

Yusupov learned how to play chess at the age of six and trained at the Moscow Pioneers' Palace. He was a student of Mikhail Botvinnik's school. In 1977, he became the World Youth Chess Champion and was also awarded the title of International Master. In 1979, he made his debut in the USSR Chess Championship and finished in second place. Yusupov was one of the winners of the Candidates Tournament in 1985 and participated in the Candidates Matches three times (1986, 1989, 1992). His coach was Mark Dvoretsky. The Dvoretsky-Yusupov chess school was later established, which produced notable chess players such as Peter Svidler, Sergei Movsesian, and Vadim Zvjaginsev. Yusupov and Dvoretsky co-authored several chess textbooks that have been translated into multiple languages.

Personal Life and Later Career

In the early 1990s, Yusupov was attacked by burglars in his Moscow apartment and was injured. He subsequently moved to Germany in 1992, where he obtained German citizenship and currently resides. He has represented both the USSR and Germany in chess competitions. Yusupov won the Chess Olympiad five times as a member of the Soviet team (1982-1990) and later played for the German team.

Main Achievements

Throughout his career, Yusupov has achieved significant results in various chess tournaments. Some of his notable achievements include winning the USSR Junior Chess Championship in 1977 and finishing second in the World Junior Chess Championship in the same year. He also finished first in the Amsterdam Masters Tournament in 1978. Yusupov has participated in multiple USSR Chess Championships and achieved high placements, such as third to fifth place in the 48th USSR Chess Championship in 1980 and fifth to sixth place in the 54th USSR Chess Championship in 1987. He has also performed well in international tournaments, winning the Zonal Tournament in Yerevan in 1982 and the Candidates Tournament in 1985.
