Charles de Cossé, Marshal of France
Charles de Cossé was a prominent French military and political figure who served as Superintendent of Finances and Marshal of France from 1567. Known as Marshal de Cossé, he was distinguished from his elder brother, also a Marshal of France, who was known as Marshal de Brissac.
Birth and Family
Charles de Cossé was born into a noble family. His father was René de Cossé, Lord of Honor and Secondigné, and his mother was Charlotte de Gouffier. He had multiple wives, including Françoise Du Bouchet and Nicole Le Roy.
Military Career
Charles de Cossé began his military career in 1567 during the French Wars of Religion. He fought in the Battle of Saint-Denis, where he earned the title of Marshal of France. In 1570, he became Lieutenant General and Governor of Orléanais and Touraine, participating in the Battle of Arnay-le-Duc that year.
Political Involvement
Beyond his military achievements, Charles de Cossé also played a significant role in French politics. He was suspected of belonging to the "politique" party, which aimed to reconcile Catholics and Protestants, and was briefly imprisoned in the Bastille in 1574. However, he was later rehabilitated and continued his political activities.
Later Life
Charles de Cossé continued to serve as Marshal of France and Superintendent of Finances until his death in 1599. He was a skilled military commander and a respected figure in French politics. His legacy as a military and political leader has left a lasting mark on French history.
