Esmat Abdel Meguid
Early Life and EducationEsmat Abdel Meguid was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He graduated with a law degree from Alexandria University and pursued further studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. He earned a doctorate in law and dedicated his career to diplomacy.
Diplomatic Career
In 1950, Meguid embarked on his diplomatic journey within the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He held various positions in Cairo and abroad, including postings in the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland. His diplomatic acumen was recognized when he became Egypt's ambassador to France from 1969 to 1970.
Government Service
From 1970 to 1972, Meguid served as State Minister for Cabinet Affairs. In 1972, he was appointed Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations, a role he fulfilled for the next 12 years.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Meguid's diplomatic prowess reached its peak when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in July 1984. He assumed the additional role of Deputy Prime Minister in September 1985. During his tenure, he authored numerous articles on international law.
Secretary-General of the Arab League
In 1991, Meguid took the helm as Secretary-General of the Arab League. He held this prestigious position until 2001, demonstrating his commitment to Arab unity and cooperation.
Personal Life
