Indian Boy Receives New Nose Grown on His Forehead
Lost Nose from Quack TreatmentArun Patel, a 12-year-old boy from Indore, India, lost his nose due to a severe infection in his early years. The soft tissues of his nose began to dry and fall off after a series of treatments administered by quack doctors.
Uneducated village practitioners administered injections into Arun's face when he was barely a month old. These practices soon led to disastrous consequences that were, thankfully, addressed by genuine medical professionals in India.
Extraordinary Plastic Surgery
An unusual plastic surgery was performed in multiple stages. First, a new nose was grown on the boy's forehead, which was then transplanted to its proper place.
Dr. Ashwini Dash, who led the team of surgeons, stated that "Arun Patel's nose died off due to side effects of injections administered to him when he was just eleven months old." "It was not possible to perform a traditional rhinoplasty on Arun's face, as his nose had almost vanished completely."
Dash continues: "For this reason, we decided to do a plastic surgery called 'forehead flap rhinoplasty.'" The doctors first reconstructed Patel's nose on his forehead and then implanted the nose in its proper location.
Four-Phase Surgery
The rare surgery was carried out in four distinct phases over a period of more than a year. In the first stage, a special silicone "tissue expander" was implanted in the patient's forehead to create room for the procedure. A chemical was then introduced to help stretch the tissues on the forehead.
Next, the surgeons harvested cartilage from the lower part of Arun's rib cage to create an artificial nose. The nose grew on his forehead for three months, with sufficient blood supply in the area supporting the tissue development, before it was removed and implanted in its rightful place.
After the transplantation, another surgery was required to restore the part of the forehead where the nose had been grown.
Monitoring and Future Care
The doctors stated that they will monitor the nasal implant for any issues that may require further surgery.
Dr. Dash revealed that he had read about a similar case in China before Arun's case came to him. "After learning about that case, I was always on the lookout for an opportunity where I could grow a nose for a patient using the tissue from their own body and help the damaged organ function properly," said Ashwini. "Thankfully, I got Arun, which enabled me to fulfill my dream."
The doctor adds: "As the boy comes from a poor family, we absorbed all the expenses of the year-long treatment."
New Nose, New Life
Patel, with his new nose, shared with the media that he was delighted with the results.
He stated: "I was too scared to look at myself in the mirror. I used to walk on the roads with my head down."
"Earlier, other kids in the school were either scared or amused to see me."
