Ignác Einhorn
Ignác Einhorn was a Hungarian rabbi, politician, economist, and statistician. He was a staunch liberal in both religion and politics.
Early Life and Education
Einhorn studied at Talmudic schools in Nitra, Pressburg, Prague, and the University of Budapest. He embarked on his journalistic career in Budapest, writing for the newspapers "Pester Lloyd" and "Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums" and the journal "Der Orient."
Religious and Political Involvement
In 1847, Einhorn began preaching at the Alt-Ofen synagogue. He founded the weekly journal "Der Ungarische Israelit" in Budapest in April 1848. He also actively participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849 as a revolutionary orator and army chaplain.
Exile and Scholarship
After the surrender of the revolutionary troops at Világosh, Einhorn returned home but fled to Vienna and then Prague due to fears for his safety. He wrote political pamphlets under the pseudonym "Eduard Horn" while in hiding in Leipzig. In 1852, he published "Spinoza's Staatslehre zum Ersten Male Dargestellt" in Amsterdam. He continued his studies in French, English, and statistics in Brussels.
Economic Expertise
Einhorn moved to Paris in 1856 and became a correspondent for German newspapers. He was appointed to edit the political economy and financial sections of the "Journal des débats." He published several works on economics, including "Statistische Gemälde des Königreichs Belgien," "Bevolkerungswissenschaftliche Studien aus Belgien," and "L'Economie Politique Avant les Physiocrates."
Return to Hungary and Political Success
Einhorn returned to Hungary in 1869 and was elected to parliament as a representative of Pressburg. He later became an MP for the capital and was named Minister of Trade in 1875.
