Asan-Kaigy, which translates to "miserable" in Russian, was a poet, philosopher, and advisor to Khan Zhani Bek. Researchers believe that he lived during the 15th century. Another person with the same name appeared at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His lifetime coincided with the formation of the Kazakh people and statehood. There is a version suggesting Asan-Kaigy's Kyrgyz origins, which can be justified by the commonality and proximity of the Kazakh and Kyrgyz peoples.

An Influential Poet

The poet's high authority is evidenced by the fact that he was given the nickname Asan-Ata, meaning "grandfather" in a metaphorical sense, as a sign of respect for his association with Khan Zhani Bek and his ability to express the interests of the people. Asan-Kaigy urged the Khan to set aside his personal interests and ambitions and prioritize the "duty of the Khan to his people," the sovereignty of the people, and their relationship with neighboring communities.

Asan-Kaigy keenly felt the instability of the nomadic pastoral life, its dependence on weather conditions and natural disasters, such as droughts and freezes, which led to the loss of livestock. This inspired his dreams of an "uninhabited land" or a "promised land," and reflected the tragedy of his worldview, which was encapsulated in his nickname "miserable." His experiences and sufferings, both human and animal, deeply affected him. Consequently, his ideas of love and compassion emerged, earning him the title of a "nomadic philosopher" by Valikhanov.

Asan-Kaigy envisioned the "promised land" as a place of happiness and equality for all people. Regardless of the living conditions, he believed that individuals should be sincere and honest, fearing the consequences of "hurtful words" as they are associated with "evil".
