Catherine de Poitiers: A Renaissance Woman

Born into a literary family in Poitiers, Catherine de Poitiers was the daughter of renowned writer Madeleine de Roche and the city's prosecutor. Her contemporaries included the celebrated poet Pierre de Ronsard and humanist Étienne Pasquier.

Literary Salon

Catherine surpassed her mother in beauty, but surpassed her in pride. Their salon, active from 1570 to 1587, became a vibrant literary hub in Poitiers, attracting poets and writers alike. Catherine played a pivotal role in this gathering, foreshadowing the salons of Marie le Jars de Gournay and Julie Rambouillet d'Angennes.

Literary Collaborations

Together with her mother, Catherine published two collections of poetry: "Les pulces poétiques, premières oeuvres de m-mes D. de Poitiers, mère et fille" (1579) and "Secondes oeuvres de m-mes D. de Poitiers, mère et fille" (1584). These works were met with critical acclaim, showcasing their shared literary talent.

Tragic End

In a cruel twist of fate, both Catherine and her mother passed away on the same day in 1587, victims of the plague that ravaged Poitiers. Their untimely demise left a void in the Renaissance literary landscape.
