Biography of Ásgeir Ásgeirsson

Early Life and Education

Ásgeir Ásgeirsson was born on May 13, 1894. He graduated with honors from the University of Iceland's theological faculty in 1915. However, he was deemed too young to become a pastor.

Marriage and Political Beginnings

In 1917, Ásgeirsson married Dora Thorkhallsdottir, whose father was the bishop of Iceland. In 1923, he entered politics as a member of the Althing, Iceland's parliament, representing the Progressive Party. He served as its chairman from 1932 to 1933.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister

Ásgeirsson served as Minister of Finance from 1931 to 1934. In 1932, he became Prime Minister in a coalition government between the Social Democrats and Progressives. He held this position until 1934.

President of Iceland

In 1938, Ásgeirsson became the director of the Icelandic bank "Utvegsbanki Islands." Following the death of the first President of Iceland, Sveinn Björnsson, in 1952, Ásgeirsson was elected President on August 1, 1952. He was re-elected in 1956, 1960, and 1964, becoming President each time unopposed.

Later Life and Legacy

Ásgeirsson resigned from the Social Democratic Party after his election as President. He died on January 25, 1972. He is remembered as a respected and influential figure in Icelandic politics and history.
