Ashrafi Abbasov: A Musical Luminary

Early Life and Education

Ashrafi Abbasov was born on March 23, 1920, in the humble abode of a tailor in Shusha. After completing elementary education and attending the pedagogical faculty in his hometown, he pursued music studies at the Shusha Music School.

Rise to Prominence

In 1936, Abbasov moved to Baku and enrolled at the Azerbaijan State Musical College. He soon joined renowned composer Seid Rustamov's Orchestra of Folk Instruments, performing at the inaugural Decade of Azerbaijani Literature and Arts in Moscow. Recognizing his exceptional talent, the college authorities facilitated his early transfer to the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.

Military Service and the Great Patriotic War

Tragically, Abbasov's studies were cut short in December 1939 when he was conscripted into the Red Army. As a musician in the 345th Infantry Regiment, he witnessed the horrors of the Great Patriotic War. During a fierce battle near Yelnya, he sustained severe injuries and underwent months of treatment in Tomsk.

Post-War Career

Forced to demobilize due to his wounds, Abbasov returned home and continued his recovery at his parents' house. He resumed teaching at the Shusha Music School before returning to Baku to complete his Conservatory studies.

Academic Pursuits and Conservatory Leadership

Abbasov graduated with honors in 1952 and pursued postgraduate studies at the Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky. He became the first Azerbaijani composer to attain a doctoral degree. Upon his return to Baku, he joined the faculty of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.

Artistic Legacy

Abbasov's musical repertoire spanned orchestral works, songs, chamber compositions, ballets, and operettas. His works showcased his deep understanding of Azerbaijani folk music and his mastery of Western musical principles.

Administrative Roles and Literary Works

Throughout his career, Abbasov held various administrative positions, including principal of the Shusha Music School and director of the Asaf Zeynalli Music College in Baku. He also served as rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory and head of its Composition Department for many years. Notably, Abbasov also authored several literary works.
