Antonio Barili: Biography

Antonio Barili was an American pianist, composer, and music educator of Italian descent. Born in Italy, he moved to the United States at the age of four months.

Early Life and Education

Barili received his early music lessons from his father. He made his public debut as a pianist at the age of 10. In Philadelphia, he studied piano with Carl Wolfsohn. From 1872 to 1879, he attended the Cologne Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ferdinand Hiller and Friedrich Gernsheim, and piano with James Kwast.

Career in Atlanta

Upon his return to the United States in 1880, Barili settled in Atlanta, Georgia. He became the city's first resident pianist and gave regular performances. He also taught at the Atlanta Female Institute.

In 1883, Barili organized and hosted the city's first music festival. He collaborated with conductor Theodore Thomas to arrange for a touring orchestra to perform in Atlanta, with Barili conducting the choral portions.

Private Music School and Artistic Success

In 1899, Barili founded his own private music school, one of the first in the American South. He continued to perform as a pianist and accompanist, notably accompanying his wife on her 1911 concert tour in London.

Barili's salon piano pieces enjoyed some popularity. His "Cradle Song" was particularly successful, going through 26 editions.
