Early Life and Education
Born in Malaysia, the esteemed linguist embarked on her academic journey at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, graduating in 1961. She subsequently pursued a Master's degree at the same institution, which she completed in 1963.
Academic Career
In 1963, she joined the faculty of the University of Malaya (UM), where she taught for nearly four decades until 2000. During her tenure at UM, she ascended to the rank of Professor in 1976 and was later bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus in 2000. In 1972, she assumed the leadership of UM's Language Center.
Administrative Roles
In addition to her academic pursuits, she held significant administrative roles at UM. From 1983 to 1986, she served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. After retiring from UM in 2000, she was appointed Director of the Za'ba Malaysian Civilization Center at the Sultan Idris Education University in Tanjung Malim from 2001 to 2005.
Contributions to Malay Linguistics
As a renowned linguist, she has authored numerous esteemed works on Malay linguistics, including a highly respected normative grammar. Her invaluable research has significantly advanced the understanding and development of the Malay language.
