Asmir Begović: Bosnia's Goalkeeping Titan
Bosnia's surprising appearance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup was no accident, and those who were paying attention knew the name behind the team's qualification success: Asmir Begović. Today, he is widely regarded as one of Europe's top goalkeepers, with many predicting he could become the world's best within a few years. Asmir recently made history by scoring the longest goal ever recorded in football.
Early Life and Emigration
Asmir Begović was born on June 20, 1987, in Trebinje, then part of Yugoslavia. His father was a goalkeeper for local clubs FK Leotar and FK Iskra Stolac. Fleeing the war, the family moved to Germany, where Asmir began his early training with FC Kirchhausen. They eventually relocated to Canada, where Asmir joined Southwest Sting in Edmonton and impressed enough to be called up to the Canadian youth national team.
Path to Portsmouth
In 2003, Asmir's performances caught the attention of Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur, who invited him for trials. Portsmouth wasted no time in offering the young keeper a contract, which he accepted, admitting that playing in the English Premier League had been a dream.
Loan Spells and Maturation
Asmir's path to the Portsmouth first team was a winding one. After a few appearances, the club sent him on loan to lower-league clubs where he could gain valuable experience. Over the next five years, Asmir played for La Louvière, Macclesfield Town, Bournemouth, Yeovil Town, and Ipswich Town.
Arrival at Stoke City
In 2010, Stoke City came calling, seeking a replacement for veteran goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen. After negotiations, Asmir signed for the Potters in a deal worth £3 million. In his new team, he progressed rapidly, displaying exceptional form and quickly becoming one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in England.
Record-Breaking Goal and International Career
In November 2013, against Southampton, Asmir scored a remarkable goal from his own half, covering a record-breaking 97.5 yards. The Guinness World Record was officially recognized in September 2014. Asmir played for Canada's youth teams from 2004 to 2007, but in 2009, he opted to represent his native Bosnia and Herzegovina. His impressive performances helped Bosnia qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, although they exited at the group stage.
