Turkish Security Directorate Arrests Hacker Responsible for Massive Virus Attack on CNN, New York Times, and ABC
Last night, the Turkish Security Directorate, with assistance from the FBI, arrested a hacker who orchestrated a massive virus attack targeting the websites of CNN, The New York Times, and ABC.
Suspect Identified
The alleged perpetrator is 23-year-old Turkish hacker Atilla Ekici. Twelve days prior to his apprehension, Ekici reportedly infected several U.S. media websites with the "Zotob" and "Mytob" viruses.
Nature of the Attack
The cyberattack was so severe that Microsoft's headquarters was overwhelmed with complaints. It was also discovered that Ekici had breached the databases of several banks, manipulating accounts and disrupting financial transactions.
Investigation and Arrest
Following an investigation by the FBI and Microsoft, it was determined that the attack originated from the southern Turkish city of Adana. Upon receiving this information, the Turkish Security Directorate searched Ekici's apartment and confiscated his computer and numerous disks containing hacking software.
Charges and Arrests
Ekici has been charged with "computer fraud." It has also been reported that an accomplice, who collaborated with Ekici in launching the viruses, was arrested in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
