Early Career and International AccoladesAtsushi Yanagisawa, born on May 27, 1977, is a Japanese footballer who currently plays for Kashima Antlers in the J-League. His football journey began in Japan, where he made his mark as a talented forward. In 1997, he showcased his scoring prowess at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, leading Japan's attack and becoming their top scorer before reaching the quarter-finals.
Yanagisawa's international career also included representing Japan at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and several major tournaments. He triumphed with Japan at the 2000 Asian Cup and featured in the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup.
European Excursion and J-League Return
After establishing himself in the J-League, Yanagisawa embarked on an adventure to Italy's Serie A, joining Sampdoria in 2001. His time in Europe also included a stint with Messina. In February 2006, he returned to his former club, Kashima Antlers, on loan.
Yanagisawa marked his J-League return with a thunderous hat-trick against Sanfrecce Hiroshima on the opening day. However, his 2006 campaign was cut short by a severe foot injury in March, which cast doubt on his participation in the FIFA World Cup in Germany.
Perseverance and World Cup Appearance
Despite the setback, Yanagisawa's recovery progressed remarkably, and Brazilian coach Zico included him in Japan's 23-man squad for the World Cup. Yanagisawa started in the opening two matches but failed to make a significant impact, missing a crucial scoring opportunity against Croatia.
Club Struggles and Bench Role
After the World Cup, Yanagisawa's form continued to decline, and his club, Kashima Antlers, also faced a string of losses. Coach Paulo Autuori ultimately relegated Yanagisawa to the bench, opting for younger forward Yuzo Tashiro instead.
Tashiro's impressive performances in Yanagisawa's absence raised questions about Yanagisawa's future at the club. Despite his illustrious career and past achievements, the veteran striker found himself out of favor as Kashima Antlers surged back to victory.
