Audrey Kopp: A Cautionary Tale about Hair Ties

Hair Ties: A Hidden Danger

An American teen named Audrey Kopp suffered a life-threatening infection due to an overlooked habit: wearing a hair tie on her wrist. Kopp, like countless others around the world, would often keep her hair ties around her wrist for convenience.

The First Sign of Trouble

During a move, Kopp noticed a red bump on her wrist. Dismissing it as a spider bite, she paid little attention to it. However, the bump grew larger, harder, and turned a deep purple.

A Serious Infection

Concerned, Kopp sought medical attention and was prescribed antibiotics. Surprisingly, the infection persisted and worsened in severity. Intense pain eventually forced her to seek emergency medical care.

Multiple Infections

Emergency surgery revealed three types of bacteria had invaded her body. Kopp was fortunate to have escaped sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection.

Raising Awareness

Shocked by her ordeal, Kopp took to Facebook to warn others: "I'm sharing this so that no one else has to go through this... The shiny part of the hair tie is the culprit." She emphasized how a small scratch caused by friction allowed bacteria from the hair tie to enter her body.

Medical Advice

Dr. Amit Gupta, who treated Kopp, advised caution against wearing hair ties on wrists. "These hair accessories can cause skin problems and lead to infections," he said.

Recovery and Prevention

Gupta performed surgery on Kopp, removing the infected tissue and leaving her with an open wound. She is now recovering and precautionary, urging others to avoid making the same mistake she did.
