Robin's Weight Loss Journey

As a cast member on "My 600-Lb Life," Robin McKinley, a 40-year-old weighing 649 pounds, embarked on a transformative journey, shedding an astounding 254 pounds. With her husband's support, she experienced a romantic night out for the first time in years.

Family's Combined Success

Meanwhile, Robin's nephew, Garrett, weighed 605 pounds and lost 270 pounds, pursuing a welding apprenticeship. Together, their combined weight loss amounted to 511 pounds, saving their lives from the perils of obesity.

Battling Obesity

Surviving obesity, Robin faced body torment and emotional trauma, including childhood abuse and a pregnancy loss due to domestic violence. She also lost a sister to obesity in 2017. Joint pain from excessive weight forced her to leave her teaching job, confining her to a wheelchair.

Seeking Hope on "My 600-Lb Life"

Determined to overcome her struggles, Robin joined "My 600-Lb Life," sharing her story of pain and resilience. Originally planning his own journey, Robin's brother Chris's heart attack prevented him from accompanying her.

Garrett's Weight Loss Journey

Concern over his weight led Garrett, Chris's son, to seek support. Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, known as "Dr. Now," determined that Garrett was at risk of becoming "the world's heaviest teenager."

Dr. Now's Intervention

Under the strict supervision of "Dr. Now," Robin and Garrett embarked on a 600-calorie diet, losing 33 pounds and 22 pounds respectively in the first month. However, not satisfied with their progress, Dr. Now urged them to lose more weight before approving weight loss surgeries.

Moving to Houston

Accompanied by her husband James and Garrett, Robin relocated to Houston to be near Dr. Now. Amidst setbacks, including a hospitalization due to infection, Robin lost an additional 88 pounds on the 600-calorie diet.

Weight Loss Surgeries

Garrett underwent a 270-pound weight loss surgery, followed by Robin's own surgery. Depending on a patient's progress, Dr. Now offers gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.

Obesity in the UK

Obesity is a life-threatening condition, defined by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. In the UK, 58% of women and 68% of men are overweight or obese. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and 12 types of cancer. About 70% of obese teenagers have high blood pressure or cholesterol, predisposing them to cardiovascular problems. In the UK, one in five school-age children is overweight or obese, rising to one in three by age 10.
