August Heisenberg: A German Historian and Philologist
Early Life and EducationAugust Heisenberg was born in 1869 in Oberhausen, Germany. He initially studied classical philology at the University of Marburg from 1886 to 1889. Subsequently, he moved to Munich, where he became a pupil of the renowned Byzantinist Karl Krumbacher.
Academic Career
In 1894, Heisenberg earned his doctorate from the University of Munich. In 1898 and 1899, he embarked on two research trips to Italy and Greece to study Byzantine manuscripts. Heisenberg's work in these travels established him as a leading authority on Byzantine studies.
In 1901, Heisenberg became a lecturer in Medieval and Modern Greek Philology at the University of Würzburg. He taught there until 1908, when he was appointed an honorary professor. In 1910, following the death of Karl Krumbacher, Heisenberg succeeded him as Professor of Byzantine Studies and Editor-in-Chief of the "Byzantinische Zeitschrift" at the University of Munich.
Achievements and Honors
Heisenberg's contributions to the field of Byzantine studies were significant. He was known for his meticulous examination of Byzantine sources and his ability to synthesize complex historical material. In 1913, he was elected an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.
Personal Life
August Heisenberg's sons, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Heisenberg, became prominent physicists and chemists, respectively.
