August Lanner: A Musical Prodigy

Early Life and Education

August Lanner was born into a musical family in Austria. His father was the renowned composer and conductor Josef Lanner. Although August attended the St. Anna School, he received his musical training outside of the institution.

His uncle, Josef Strebinger, a Royal Imperial Court Conductor, initiated his musical education. Subsequently, August studied under Viennese composers Josef Hellmesberger and Professor Josef Mayseder.

Conducting and Debut

In 1843, at the age of eight, August experienced a tragic loss with the passing of his father. Despite this setback, he demonstrated his extraordinary talent by conducting his father's orchestra at a concert at the Brähausgarten in Fünfhaus, where approximately 2,000 people were in attendance.

Composing Career

August began composing at the tender age of 15 in 1835. He went on to create approximately 30 dances within a short time span.

Untimely Demise

Sadly, August's promising career was cut short when he succumbed to a lung ailment in 1855, just two years after he turned 20. His musical legacy continues to be celebrated, as he left behind a collection of unforgettable dance compositions.
