Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born into a family of German immigrants, Anna Kotlou began her musical journey at the tender age of three, receiving tutelage from her mother, an amateur musician.

By the age of 10, she made her debut performance in Chicago, and at 13, she captivated audiences with a rendition of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto.
Education and Mentorship
Under the guidance of Karl Wolfson, Kotlou honed her skills. Later, she traveled to Berlin (1896-1898) to study with the renowned Ferruccio Busoni. Her relationship with Busoni left a lasting impact, leading to two published memoirs and a dedication in the form of the D-flat Etude, a theme later incorporated into Busoni's piano concerto.
A Remarkable Virtuoso
James Huneker, a respected music critic, praised Kotlou as "a graceful vision with the coiffure of Cléo de Mérode." He acknowledged her rare ability to live up to her childhood promise, describing her performances as "as lucid as a Japanese ivory figurine exquisitely chiseled."
