A Promising Pianist

Lyell Barbour embarked on his professional musical journey in London, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of the renowned Tobias Matthay. His talent shone brightly, culminating in the coveted Gold Medal for Best Musician of his graduating class in 1926.

Musical Collaborations

Barbour's career flourished as he embarked on concert tours as an accompanist to the acclaimed singer Marguerite d'Alvarez. His partnership with violinist André Mange also proved fruitful, resulting in a highly praised recording and live performance of Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano. Additionally, he collaborated with pianist Lucille Wallace on a series of four-hand repertoire.

Chopin's Interpreter

Barbour's artistry extended to the works of Frédéric Chopin, for which he became highly regarded. Pianist Harriet Cohen, in her memoirs, paid tribute to his exceptional sensitivity and refinement, placing him alongside the likes of Paderewski, Cortot, and Gilels in his mastery of Chopin's music.
