Early Life and Education

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Lauska was a German pianist, composer, and music teacher born in 1774. He received his musical training in Vienna under the tutelage of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.

Courtly Career

Lauska began his career as a personal chamber musician to Duke Serbelloni in Italy. He later served as a court musician in Munich before relocating to Copenhagen in 1794, where he taught for four years.

Berlin Years

In 1798, Lauska settled in Berlin, where he became a prominent figure in the musical community. He performed as a concert pianist in cities across Europe, including Riga and St. Petersburg.

Compositions

Lauska's compositions include 16 piano sonatas and various other камерные (chamber) works. His musical style drew comparisons to that of Muzio Clementi.

Pedagogical Legacy

Lauska's greatest impact was as a music teacher. His students included notable figures such as Carl Maria von Weber, Giacomo Meyerbeer, and Moritz Hauptmann. Weber dedicated his Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 39, to Lauska. Other pupils included Helen Ries and Fanny Mendelssohn.
