Early Life and Club Career
Augusto was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and began his football career with the club São Cristóvão in 1936. He spent eight years with São Cristóvão before joining Vasco da Gama in 1945.
Success with Vasco da Gama
With Vasco da Gama, Augusto achieved his greatest success as a player. He served as captain of the team for a period and helped them win five state championships and several exhibition tournaments in South America. Augusto made 297 appearances for Vasco da Gama, establishing himself as a key defender.
International Career
Augusto represented Brazil on the international stage from 1946 to 1950, earning 20 caps and scoring one goal. He played in two South American Championships, winning the title in the latter one, and was part of the Brazil team that reached the final of the 1950 FIFA World Cup. However, Brazil's loss to Uruguay in the final, a match known as the "Maracanazo," was a major disappointment for Augusto, who was captain at the time. He was blamed for the defeat and never called up to the national team again.
Later Career and Honors
After retiring from playing, Augusto briefly attempted to coach but without much success. He later served in the Special Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commanding the Special Operations Guard.
Augusto received the Order of Military Merit for his service and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Brazilian Football.
