Early Life and Emigration
Augustus D. Juilliard was born on a ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. His French parents were immigrating to the United States when he entered the world. He grew up in Ohio before moving to New York City in 1866.
Business Success and Philanthropy
Juilliard began his career in the textile industry, opening a successful business in 1874. Through wise investments in railroads, banking, and insurance, he amassed a substantial fortune. His philanthropic efforts primarily focused on music.
The Metropolitan Opera and Beyond
From 1892 until his death, Juilliard served as President of the Metropolitan Opera. In his will, he bequeathed $5 million to promote music in the United States. The Juilliard Foundation, established to manage these funds, opened the Juilliard Graduate School in 1924, later renamed the Juilliard School of Music.
