Early Life and High School Career
Avery Bradley, an American professional basketball player, was born on November 26, 1990, in Tacoma, Washington. In his senior year of high school, he was widely regarded as one of the top prep recruits in the 2009 class. He was ranked No. 1 by ESPNU, No. 4 by Rivals.com, and No. 5 by Scout.com.
Bradley led his high school team to a national championship and was considered the nation's top high school shooting guard. He was named ESPN's National High School Player of the Year and was included in the All-State team.
College Career at Texas Longhorns
Bradley chose to attend the University of Texas and play for the Texas Longhorns. In 2002 and 2003, Bradley's family lived in Dallas, and he became a fan of the Longhorns after watching them reach the Final Four and point guard T.J. Ford play.
The Longhorns started the 2009-2010 season with a 17-0 record. On January 9, Bradley had a breakout game against the University of Colorado, scoring a career-high 29 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. In the NCAA Tournament, the Longhorns lost in the first round to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 80-81, with Bradley struggling and scoring only 9 points.
NBA Career
NBA DraftAfter a disappointing sophomore season with the Longhorns, Bradley decided to declare for the 2009 NBA Draft. Before entering pre-draft workouts, he completed the academic semester at college. NBA scouts projected Bradley to be selected in the 10-15 range, and he was eventually drafted 19th overall by the Boston Celtics.
Boston Celtics
On July 2, 2010, Bradley signed a two-year contract with the Celtics, earning approximately $1.4 million in the first year and $1.5 million in the second. On the same day, Bradley underwent ankle surgery after suffering an injury during a pre-draft workout. The recovery took longer than expected, and Bradley did not make his debut until late November. With a surprisingly serious injury, Doc Rivers eased Bradley into the lineup and gave him limited minutes. On January 14, Bradley was assigned to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League. In one game, he tied the D-League record with 9 steals in a single game. He was recalled to Boston on February 6 and appeared in short spurts for the rest of the season.
Bradley started the 2011-12 season as a backup to Rajon Rondo and Keyon Dooling at point guard, but by season's end, he was often starting at shooting guard in place of an injured Ray Allen. The new position allowed Bradley to showcase his defensive skills. By January, Bradley's defensive growth became apparent, and he made his first regular-season start for Boston that month. In the spring of 2012, Bradley emerged as one of the Celtics' key players and finished eighth in voting for the NBA's Most Improved Player Award. In Game 3 of Boston's first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks, Bradley dislocated his left shoulder and could not return. He missed a few games but returned to the lineup as the Celtics advanced to the second round, where they faced the Philadelphia 76ers. In Game 2 of that series, Bradley dislocated his shoulder again, which Doc Rivers said was the third time in two weeks, and he could not continue. On May 25, it was revealed that Bradley would undergo surgery on his shoulder and miss the rest of the playoffs. Medical evaluations revealed that he would also require surgery on his other shoulder. However, the procedure couldn't be performed until Bradley had fully recovered from the first surgery, so the extended rehabilitation period would likely sideline him for the early part of the 2012-13 season. On October 30, 2012, the Celtics re-signed Bradley through the 2013-14 season for $2.5 million. Bradley returned from injury and made his first start on January 2 against the Memphis Grizzlies. On January 28, Rajon Rondo was lost for the season due to a knee injury, and Bradley was moved into the starting lineup at point guard.
Hapoel Jerusalem
During the 2011 NBA lockout, Bradley played for Hapoel Jerusalem of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He appeared in just two games before returning to the Celtics once the lockout ended.
